about

Space Dolphin are proud to present you their debut LP More Than Soul, featuring a handful of the best rappers, wordsmiths and musical mavericks from Nottingham and Leeds. The LP is a 33 minute whistle-stop tour through the different flavours of hip hop that Space Dolphin love, with guest features on each track to really bring this record to life. More Than Soul is a celebration of the unifying spirit of music, during a poignant moment in history where social distancing has divided and separated us from who and what we love.

TRACKLISTING:

Interstellar Nuclear Fallout (Feat. Franky Bones) - A dystopian mixture of NASA space samples, atmospheric synth tones and disparate visions of the future from children of the past. Franky Bones brings this track together with his jovial prediction of what the year 3000 has in store for us all.

Blowing Zen - This track is an homage to Japanese sensibilities within hip hop. The track features the Shakuhachi, a buddhist instrument used for Suizen practise (blowing zen). The hirajoshi scales, rain texture, and nod to Shōnen anime conjures images of Ronin duels at midnight, in an ornate Kyoto shrine.

This Life (Feat. Jermaine Peterson) - This life is a unifying groove, moving to the cosmic vibrations of Sun Ra. There is no better musician to elevate the spirit than Jermaine Peterson; Jermaine’s steel pan playing brings an energy and heat to any track he blesses with his vibrant chimes.

Knowledge is the Key (Feat. Phenicia Williams) - This track is an uplifting 21st century spiritual with acid vibes; the flute and saxophone provide a euphoric atmosphere for Phenicia Williams to present a consciously-empowering message of transformation and resilience.

Psycho (Feat. Fold) - Psycho brings with it an intensity that is present nowhere else on the record. The beat is heavy, the choir vocals float ineffably in the mix and bring about a nostalgic sensibility in the listener. The track features hip hop outfit Fold, who use this beat as a means for questioning social conditioning, and as a platform for advancing racial equality.

I Could Talk All Day About Nothing - This is a dusty lo-fi filler to evoke feelings of weightlessness and absence of time. Let this track briefly take you out of your body as the telecom transmits you at the speed of sound, from satellite to transmitter.

Energy (Feat. Harleighblu) - The beat is heavy, and the neo-soul-esque arrangement provides a space for the ‘Queen of Notts’ to bring her energy and rock this record. Harleighblu effortlessly stacks layers of lush harmony to elevate this track and guide the listener through nostalgic memories of love.

À La Roi (Feat. Motormouf) - a play on words, à la roi is a reference to the king of vibraphone himself, and a shared experience between Space Dolphin and Motormouf, having supported Roy Ayers in 2019. Expect lots of beatboxing, clever use of rhythm and flow from Motormouf, and a taste of vibraphone vampy jazz that’s synonymous with old school hip hop.

Leftlion (Feat. Ty Healy) - Leftlion is a nostalgic reflection of late nights in Nottingham’s Hockley, and a collaboration with 1st Blood and Local Healers Ty Healy. Having played with Ty at We Out Here festival, Space Dolphin knew at some point they would collaborate again.

The Brass That Kicks (Feat. NikNak) - Bombastic brass, riots and protests. NikNak brings sirens, laser sounds and her amazing turntablism to what is easily the most heavy track on this release. Best to finish on a high.
